I get on the couch!

Until now, I lived in a dark storage room. I had puppies, but to be honest, I don’t really know the world. I ended up in this new home, but everything here is kind of scary—noises, people, the apartment, the leash. I holed up in a little hallway and won’t leave it. I sneak out for food and sneak right back. The hallway’s not ideal—people walk through it all the time and that terrifies me too—but at least it’s familiar, and that’s something.
But guess what—my guardian found a room with CARPET! When I don’t have to walk on slippery floors, I feel so much braver. And there’s a COUCH—I get on it! This new home’s actually kind of cool. And I think I’m really starting to like my human. Maybe we’ll even be friends.

Dogs who’ve spent their lives in sheds or isolated from people can be absolutely terrified of living indoors and being around humans.
Just like with other fearful dogs, it’s crucial to give them time and plenty of space.
Surprisingly often, dogs like this have a huge extra struggle—walking on slippery floors.
It’s worth making life easier for them with rugs or carpet runners in the areas they use.
It’s not just about easier movement—rolling on carpet lets them leave their scent, helping them feel more at home.
